Longitudes of Imagination | Imagination and Creativity That Turns Ideas into Action

As we hear words like creativity, inspiration, passion, or imagination, our mind is led into the world of art.  As we hear words like experiment, design, observe, or compute, they conjure up activities associated with the sciences. At what longitudes do these converge and foster inspiration for the future?

Our new theme Longitudes of Imagination engages Longitude fellows in leading interviews with members of unique interdisciplinary collaborations, then presenting insightful audio highlights from those interactions on our podcast that is accessible and free to the public.

Through their conversations the fellows explore how professionals in different sectors approach imagination, and how ideas turn into action for the good of humanity. These interactions aim to broaden understanding for how different skills and expertise can be integrated into solving problems or propelling ideas into fruition.

Why are we exploring imagination in connection with collaborative projects?

From archeological excavations to artificial intelligence, exploration of oceans to managing rovers and drones on planets, imagination is a capacity that continues to grow through observation of creative accomplishments.  While many of us can be imaginative, it is being creative that converts imagination into tangible outcomes. We believe extraordinary technological wonders develop and invisible solutions become visible when individuals from different fields connect their ideas and expertise around mutually rewarding projects.

The fellowship engages small groups of scientifically and intellectually curious college students and recent graduates in interactions with team members of research-driven projects. The fellows lead informational interviews with one or more members of the team, and then present short highlights from their interactions as episodes on our podcast, Longitude Sound Bytes. They gain experience in leading online interviews and making digital presentations, while growing their network and widening their horizons.
